Two American service members are dead and five others injured while conducting combat operations in northern Iraq on Sunday, but the deaths were not due to enemy forces.
Operation Inherent Resolve officials stated the incident is currently under investigation. No further information was immediately available from the military about the incident.
"There are no words to describe the respect I have for [the families of the service members] and sorrow I have for your loss. I hope there is some small solace in knowing their loss has meaning for our country and all the nations of the coalition as the fallen service members were fighting to defeat a truly evil enemy and to protect our homelands," said Army Lt. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, commander of Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve.
The service members were a part of a team fighting the Islamic State in northern Iraq.
The military typically waits until all the families members of those who have died have been notified before making their identities public.
