The White House won some negative headlines for scheduling a fundraiser during President Obama's trip Wednesday to Texas to mourn the shooting deaths at Fort Hood U.S. Army base, but he's actually attending two, one with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi at a $17.1 million home.
His first stop is the base near Austin, where Spc. Ivan Lopez, 34, carried out the rampage last week, killing three and wounding 16 before taking his own life.
Afterwards, Obama will put on his fundraiser-in-chief hat two two fundraisers tied into the trip. Having an official event helps cut the costs of Air Force One to the political committees.

Paul Bedard, the Washington Examiner's "Washington Secrets" columnist, can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Later today, the president will headline two fund-raising events in Houston. The first, for the DNC, is closed press. Background from a DNC official: “The President will attend a roundtable discussion for the DNC at a private residence in Houston with approximately 30 supporters who will contribute up to $32,400.”
The second event is a joint fund-raiser for the DSCC and DCCC. This will be at the home of trial lawyer John Eddie Williams Jr., a major Democratic donor. On background from a DSCC official: “President Obama will attend a joint event for the DSCC and DCCC at the home John Eddie and Sheridan Williams in Houston, Texas. Tickets for the event range between $16,200 and $64,800. DSCC Chairman Michael Bennet will also attend.
Mr. Williams tells your pooler that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi also is expected, along with 70 or so other guests. VIPs expected include Houston Mayor Annise Parker, former mayor Bill White, U.S. Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee, Gene Green and Al Green (all D-Houston). Not expected: David Alameel, the likely Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate and himself a huge Democratic donor. He faces LaRouche Democrat and Obama impeachment advocate Kesha Rogers in a May 27 runoff for the right to face Sen. John Cornyn.
Alameel’s campaign tells us he’ll be elsewhere but notes that he was with Obama at the last DSCC fund-raiser in Texas.
To get the background out of the way, the Williams spread is huge. It’s assessed on local tax rolls for $17.1 million. It has 26,463 square feet, four bedrooms, five full baths, seven half-baths, an elevator, five fireplaces.
