The first round worked out well for the Redskins, even if they didn’t have a draft pick. That is, if they want to find another defensive back.

Four cornerbacks and three safeties were selected in the first round, though some experts and analysts felt there was a chance a couple others could have joined that list.

The safeties selected: Kenny Vaccaro (New Orleans), Eric Reid (San Francisco) and Matt Elam (Baltimore).

The corners selected: Dee Milliner (New York Jets), D.J. Hayden (Oakland), Desmond Trufant (Atlanta) and Xavier Rhodes (Minnesota).

Because the Redskins, who need more help in the secondary, have the 51st overall pick, other safeties and corners will be gone before they choose. Among players who could have snuck into the first round: safety Jonathan Cyprien, who impressed many with his swagger and physical play during the Senior Bowl. It would still be a big surprise if he fell to the Redskins. There are 18 selections in the second round before Washington picks.

Corner Robert Alford was another player who might have snuck into the first round, though most pegged him as a second-round pick. Alford also can help on special teams in coverage and the return game.

Other defensive backs still available: safety D. J. Swearinger, corner Jamar Taylor, corner Darius Slay, safety Baccari Rambo, corner Tyrann Mathieu, safety T.J. McDonald and safety Duke Williams. Not all are projected second-rounders.

Right tackle Terron Armstead remains available after a first round in which 18 linemen were selected. He would fill another area the Redskins could upgrade, though they re-signed starter Tyler Polumbus, drafted Tom Compton a year ago and signed free agents Tony Pashos and Jeremy Trueblood.

Only three receivers were picked in the first round, which was not a surprise. Among the second-round options for Washington at this position: Quinton Patton, Terrence Williams and Markus Wheaton.

But, if the Redskins stick to the best player theory, they could also look at a tight end or linebacker at 51. They also own the 23rd pick in the third round, 85th overall.
