With congressional inaction putting the federal government on the brink of a partial shutdown, the public's disgust of Congress is at a record high, a new poll released Monday says.
Only 10 percent of respondents to a CNN-sponsored survey approve of the way Congress is handling its job. That's down from 20 percent from a similar CNN poll taken Sept. 6-8.
Eighty-seven percent of respondents disapprove of Congress' handling of its job, while 4 percent had no opinion in the latest survey, taken Friday through Sunday.
While in recent years Americans consistently have given Congress approval ratings of less than 30 percent, the new CNN poll marks a new low.
President Obama's job approval is almost unchanged according to the CNN poll, which shows the president's approval rating at 44 percent — only one percentage point less than the network's early September survey, though down from 53 percent in May.
