Police are investigating the slaying of a 15-year-old Suitland High School student -- the fifth young student to be killed in the county this school year.

About 4:20 p.m. Monday, police went to the 4000 block of 28th Avenue in Hillcrest Heights and found Charles Michael Walker Jr. on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Prince George's County police said.

Police are working to determine the motive and suspect(s) in the case. Walker's friends and family have told media outlets that they believe he may have been killed over a pair of new shoes.

Detectives have already received multiple tips from the Crime Solvers line and are encouraging the public to continue to provide information. The Crime Solvers number is 866-411-TIPS (8477).

Monday's incident is the fifth slaying of a teenage student in Prince George's County this school year. All of the incidents have taken place off school grounds.

"These senseless acts of violence against our children are becoming all too familiar and far too common," read a statement from the school system. "We extend our deepest condolences to the student's family and friends during this very difficult time."

Grief counselors will be at Suitland High School for as long as they are needed to assist students and staff in the wake of Charles' killing.
