An Iranian lawmaker announced he would give $3 million to any person who is able to assassinate President Trump.
“On behalf of the people of Kerman province, we will pay a $3 million reward in cash to whoever kills Trump,” lawmaker Ahmad Hamzeh told the nation’s Parliament, Reuters reported Tuesday. It is unclear if the reward is also supported by Iran’s top leaders.
Hamzeh went on to urge Iran to continue developing nuclear weapons along with long-range missiles.
“If we had nuclear weapons today, we would be protected from threats,” he stated. “We should put the production of long-range missiles capable of carrying unconventional warheads on our agenda. This is our natural right.”
The United States and Iran have both rejected the 2015 nuclear deal, which was meant to curb the ability of the Middle Eastern country to develop nuclear weapons. Iran had always contended that it did not intend to build any nuclear weapons, but the country is now threatening to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1970.
“If the Europeans continue their improper behavior or send Iran’s file to the Security Council, we will withdraw from the NPT,” Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s foreign minister, said Monday.
The threat comes as the United Kingdom, France, and Germany have all accused the country of violating the 2015 nuclear agreement and threatened to hold Iran accountable.
Trump ordered the killing of the country’s top shadow leader, Qassem Soleimani, earlier this year. Iran’s initial retaliation was a ballistic missile attack on two military bases in Iraq housing American troops. A senior Iranian official suggested that the country could also target Trump’s properties worldwide.
U.S. disarmament ambassador Robert Wood called the assassination reward “ridiculous” and claimed it shows the nation’s “terrorist underpinnings.”
