So reads the headline on the usually mild-mannered Walter Russell Mead’s long essay on Barack Obama’s Middle East policies. Mead shares the view, common if not obligatory, he says, among all elite foreign policymakers and  commentators, that democracy with a regulated market economy is the best form of government. But many societies, he says, are just not ready for it. Egypt, where the army is bloodily suppressing the Muslim Brotherhood, is a prime example and, alas, there are many others. He indicts not only Obama but also George W. Bush for failing to understand this. Very much worth reading.
