In an open letter today, a coalition of 236 business groups urged Congress to prevent a government shutdown. The coalition instead urged Congress to "promptly to pass a Continuing Resolution to fund the government and to raise the debt ceiling, and then to return to work on ... other vital issues."

The coalition was lead by the Chamber of Commerce and included such groups as the National Association of Manufacturers, the National Federation of Independent Business and the National Retail Federation, among others. The letter stated:

The Senate voted 79-19 Friday to end debate on a budget bill called a continuing resolution that will keep the government funded through Nov. 15. The legislation now goes to the House, where it must pass by midnight Monday to avoid a government shutdown.

Some Republicans, led by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, are urging their House counterparts to vote the measure down because it was stripped of language to defund Obamacare.
