Just when you think there's nothing new in folk, along comes the New York-based Red Rooster to blow you away.
Red Rooster isn't a new band but you'd never know that by the way they mix electronica with folk, alt-country and some rock to offer a fresh sound.
"I was just continuing to focus the theme, bringing the kind of urban element together with the more rural and traditional," said lead vocalist Jay Erickson, who produced the record. "We started...

You know how it is when a blockbuster movie is released and everyone's talking about how great it is and you don't say much because you thought it, well, just wasn't that good?

Think about the difference between the gun-toting Bonnie and Clyde and the "Mad Hatter" -- a modern-day New Jersey bank robber armed only with a note -- and you see how the crime and its perpetrators have evolved. Perhaps you hadn't thought of this change -- really, how many of us have? -- but that attention to detail is what sets singer-songwriter Willy Porter apart.

It's a fair bet that when William Shakespeare penned "Much Ado About Nothing," he never imagined a latter-day rendition would have a Caribbean/D.C. theme.
Yet once audiences watch such a production presented at Folger Theatre, it might be difficult to imagine it any other way.

"We've sort of found the line," said frontman/lead songwriter Gary Lightbody. "We are ready to enter our next phase.
The first phase of the band began somewhat haphazardly when Lightbody and his bandmates formed a student band at Dundee University, Dundee, Scotland. It crossed the finish line in a way in 2006 when the album "Eyes Open" became the year's...

It's tough not to be pulled into the questions posed throughout "The Quality of Life," Arena Stage's latest production.

There's something so spirited, so joyful, so eclectic about Caravan of Thieves and the music it creates, it's difficult not to love them.
Whatever else is said about the band, there's little doubt they have a sound -- gypsy folk/jazz with elements of pop and even classical -- that is truly its own. When A.A. Bondy was the front man of Verbena, his style and persona were often compared to the late Kurt Cobain.
It likely wouldn't be a mistake to say one reason the rockers' releases became alt classics was the disillusioned persona -- reflected in the band's music -- that Bondy and his band mates projected.
But don't think the title of Bondy's second solo album, "When the Devil's Loose," means he's stuck in the Cobain persona. Quite the opposite.

Buyers that seek midsize sedans may well have one of the more difficult auto search challenges. It's a crowded field and the differences among many models are often subtle at best.

The quandary poised in the World Premiere of "Eclipsed" -- the first play of Woolly Mammoth's 30th season -- is no academic exercise. Actress and playwright Danai Gurira was a graduate student when she went to Liberia in 2007, fascinated by some of the female warriors who had made such decisions.
The soldiers in the 14-year civil war were anything but stereotypical -- Gurira had seen photos of the women clad in Forever 21-style clothing with AK-47s slung across their backs. Each of the women had a story, and Gurira was anxious to strip away the layers and...

It was just over a year ago -- Aug. 18, 2008 -- that founding member LeRoi Moore died. And as Matthews, who has joined the other band members in a hiatus from news media interviews, told Relix magazine, the death hit the group hard. After a time of turmoil in the band, differences were resolved and everyone was pumped as they recorded the band's seventh...

Does the world really need another sport utility vehicle on the market?
If you're leaning toward a negative response, you might want to hold back until you try a 2010 Volvo XC60.
At first glance, the car doesn't look much like a Volvo. Gone are the classic straight lines that are the familial bones of every car by this Swedish automaker. Instead, the XC60 has a curvier body, larger grille and a broader shoulder line than the rest of the line combined. Large "projector beam" headlights also boost the look. There are also plenty of extra features such as heated outside mirrors.
Suffice to say the XC60 is the first of what seem to be an interesting design concept that clearly...

In the 20 years the rock/punk/Celtic group Young Dubliners has been around, they've ignored labels and carved a niche as a fusion band -- not rock, not punk, not Celtic but all of those sounds.
But despite the auditory blend, critics still label the band and make descriptive comparisons such as "The Pogues Meet Van Halen."
"Yeah we really hate that," said band vocalist and guitarist Keith Roberts. "Early on we were Pogues with U2 or Pearl Jam, but we didn't even really...

The Washington Coliseum was once a popular spot for sporting events, concerts and political rallies. Now, it serves as an indoor parking lot after some years as a trash transfer station. The site of the Beatles' first North American concert, besides their "Ed Sullivan Show" performance, featured was a home for go-go musicians and once housed midget auto racing. The Coliseum, which seated 9,000, was built in 1941 and run by Miguel L. "Uncle Mike" Uline of the Washington Lions, a hockey team. The D.C. "Before that, I didn't listen to much music. I liked Duran Duran," he said. "As soon as she gave me a mix top of the Beatles, I fell in love with Paul's music and I started gradually building my collection. I liked it all, but I liked Paul most right away."

It’s a dog’s life in Tom Stoppard’s translation of “Heroes” currently at MetroStage — and what an interesting life it is.
This production had a 2003 premiere in Paris as “Le Vent des Peupliers” (“The Wind in the Poplars”), was retitled “Heroes” in 2005 and presented in London — to much acclaim — and had a 2007 American debut in Los Angeles. It’s easy to see why this show will undoubtedly continue to win critical and popular kudos for years to come.

2009 Kia Sportage
Engine » 60-degree V-6, aluminum block and heads, 264 hp @ 6000 rpm
Transmission » 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic
Manufacturer’s suggested retail price » From $20,370
It’s important to take all of the kudos any car receives with a large grain of salt, but it’s clear why Consumer Digest named the 2009 Kia Sportage a “Best Buy” for the second year in a row. Although last year’s model rightfully received praise, the 2009 version has an updated...

But there’s something so fresh and honest about “Small Craft Warnings,” his work the Washington Shakespeare Company at Clark Street Playhouse is currently staging, it actually overshadows the brilliance of Williams’ better-known works such as “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “Glass Menagerie.”
Perhaps my exuberance is spurred by discovering this relatively obscure play in a wonderfully staged production. The WSC has turned the lobby of the Clark Street Playhouse into a seedy, waterside bar in which the audience sits on folding chairs and small, often dirty tables. The...

What the heck is Olney Theatre Center doing staging “Call of the Wild” in a way that not only gives the classic American story a modern slant, but injects slight humor and beauty into what was once an overwhelmingly savage tale?
Fear not, Jack London fans. The American novel released at the twilight of the 19th century is still fairly intact, although some creative license was taken, which further strengthens the tale’s underlying message. Though the story from the play’s first act is fairly true to the original novel, the play’s second act is more the story of “White Fang,” London’s 1906 follow-up to “Call of the Wild.”
As you...
