Former NFL quarterback and three-time retiree Brett Favre has endorsed Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., in a new ad created by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Cochran faces a tough re-election against radio host Chris McDaniel, who has forced the incumbent into a run-off election next Tuesday.

Favre's ad is nothing unexpected. Favre, unshaven, uses his football career to talk about how “strong leadership can be the difference between winning and losing,” and that voting for Cochran would be a win for Mississippi.

But that’s not the metaphor I’m talking about.

Think about it: Brett Favre played past his prime, and, according to McDaniel's supporters, so has Cochran.

If Cochran’s trying to make his case for re-election, using someone who kept playing even though his skills were slipping might not be the best idea.
