The British publicist who helped arrange and attended the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer is preparing to speak with members of special counsel Robert Mueller’s team, according to a report.
Rob Goldstone has been talking with Mueller’s office through a lawyer, a source told NBC News. The publicist has been living in Bangkok, Thailand, but is expected to come to the U.S. “in the near future.”
Goldstone emailed Trump Jr. last year about attending a meeting at Trump Tower with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer. In one email, Goldstone said the Russians had damaging information on Hillary Clinton that would benefit the campaign of Trump Jr.'s father, who is now the current U.S. president.
The information, Goldstone said, “is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.”
Trump Jr. replied to the email, saying, “If it’s what you say I love it especially late in the summer.”
Goldstone and Trump Jr. attended the meeting with Veselnitskaya. Then-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner also attended.
The meeting at Trump Tower has been a focus of Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, as is the drafting of a statement the White House released about Trump Jr.’s attendance at the meeting.
Veselnitskaya and Trump Jr. have both said the meeting did not last very long, and it ended after it became clear the Russian lawyer primarily wanted to discuss the 2012 Magnitsky Act, a law that punished Russian human rights abusers.
