As MSNBC prepared to cover President Obama’s press conference Tuesday afternoon, anchors Alex Wagner and Chris Matthews spent some time discussing Ted Cruz’s recent comments about his fellow Republicans acting like “squishes.”

“These terms he comes up with,” Matthews grinned, “they sound like the McCarthy period, and now ‘squishes’ sounds like high school, about 1958.”

Wagner said that Cruz’s words signaled that conservatives in Congress were worried about new momentum for additional gun control legislation.

“The fact that Ted Cruz came out yesterday and called those people, those people in his own party who supported gun safety reform ‘squishes,’ that’s a testament that they’re a little more worried about this than they have been,” she declared.
