Officials in Washington say they're starting to pick up Christmas trees and wreaths.

Tree and wreath pickup in the District of Columbia started Monday and continues through Jan. 12.

Officials say residents should remove all decorations from trees and put them where they place trash and recycling for collection. The trees shouldn't be put in plastic or cloth bags. The trees will be chipped and composted after being picked up.

Any trees not collected by Jan. 12 will be picked up as space in the trash trucks allows.
