DES MOINES — Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday night that GOP front-runner Donald Trump was "basically a Democrat" before he switched over to the Republican Party in recent years.

Clinton made the comment during the closing moments of the Brown and Black Forum at Drake University when asked what she gave Trump at his 2007 wedding to Melania Knauss — now his wife

"Nothing," Clinton said about the gift before discussing Trump's switch in party.

"He was basically a Democrat before he was a Republican," Clinton said. "And, you know, he was basically somebody we all knew in New York and he was supportive of Democrats, he was supportive of a lot of the causes that I cared about and the people I knew cared about."

"And so now, he seems to have taken another road," she concluded.

Clinton's comment comes three weeks before the Iowa caucuses are set to kick off, where Clinton is battling Sen. Bernie Sanders for supremacy, and Trump is trying to top Sen. Ted Cruz, who is holding a slim lead.
