Stephen Colbert said places like Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations aren’t “shithole” countries because President Trump is not their leader.
“All week long, President Trump has tried desperately to convince us that he’s a stable, steady leader,” Colbert said Thursday, calling it a “nice act.”
“Today he returned to the same unstable, reactionary president we’ve all come to know and know,” Colbert continued, referring to Trump’s “shithole” comments.
The Washington Post reported Thursday that Trump asked lawmakers in a meeting about immigration: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”
“Sir, they’re not shithole countries. For one, Donald Trump isn’t their president,” Colbert quipped.
In a tweet Friday morning, Trump denied using such language as he faced intense backlash. The president did admit that he had used “tough” words, but did not clarify what he had said in the meeting.
