Don't be surprised if you see Kathleen Madigan enjoying watching the Masters this weekend at a local watering hole.

But if you do run into the popular comedian, let her enjoy the round. She's a big golf fan.

"Sometimes I like to go out for a bit and have a beer and a burger, and then I kind of like to hear it," said Madigan, speaking by phone from her West Hollywood home last week. "I'm very torn. There's a lot in D.C. I like to do, and it just happens to be Masters weekend. This is the Super Bowl of golf."

Madigan performs at the Birchmere from Thursday through Sunday.

The 47-year-old Madigan has had a long and rich career performing stand-up. She estimates that she's scheduled for 250 dates each year.

"I actually really enjoy it," Madigan said. "There's a handful of us. I just like going to weird places, I like seeing weird people. I like to know what's going on."

Madigan doesn't really focus on writing material but instead just draws from her life or what's happening in the world.

She added that she likes talking about politics, which should serve her well performing in the D.C. area.

"I like it more when the season is hot," Madigan said. "The debate season was so much fun. I'd be very torn between politics and sports. Like, if you could have a ticket to the debate or a ticket to the Super Bowl, oooh, I don't know. I'd have to have somebody else decide for me."

Originally from St. Louis, Madigan's comedy credits include various late-night shows, as well as her own stand-up specials. She said she got into comedy as a process of elimination. She had a job bartending and would relax by catching a nearby comedy club's open mic nights. She soon figured she could do better than what she was seeing.

"It's really just an accident," Madigan said. "Thank god, though. If it weren't an accident, I'd still be bartending."

While Madigan is one of the top comedians in the business, she still gets the "best female" comedian compliment qualifier before her name.

Not that she really cares.

"It doesn't bother me," Madigan said. "People, it's fine."
