Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight Reform Committee, said Thursday he planned to send the FBI a criminal referral to investigate whether Hillary Clinton lied under oath about her private email use.
At a hearing focused on the FBI's decision to clear Clinton of criminal wrongdoing for her handling of classified information, Chaffetz asked FBI Director James Comey whether Clinton had lied under oath.
"We have no basis to conclude that she lied to the FBI," Comey said.
But the FBI director refused to say whether his findings indicated Clinton lied to the public.
Chaffetz said his committee planned to send a referral to the FBI to look into whether Clinton lied under oath about her email use after Comey said he would need one to examine whether she was dishonest.
Clinton has also spoken about her email use under oath before the House Select Committee on Benghazi and has signed an affidavit under oath in a federal court swearing that she turned over all work-related emails, an assertion that was revealed to be untrue by Comey earlier this week.
