On this day, Dec. 11, in 1997, Henry Cisneros, President Clinton's first housing secretary, was indicted for conspiracy, obstructing justice and making false statements to the FBI about payments to his former mistress.
Cisneros and political fundraiser Linda Jones had an affair that began in 1987 when he was mayor of San Antonio. Cisneros went public with the relationship the following year.
But prosecutors said he lied in 1992 during his FBI background investigation about the amount he paid his former mistress.
In 1999, the onetime Democratic star pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor. The four-year independent counsel investigation cost more than $9 million. Cisneros was eventually pardoned by Clinton.
