The two sides marched to about 10 feet of each other. Virgil Earp, the town marshall, shouted, "Boys, throw up your hands. I want your guns."
Shots rang out, and the 30-second shootout resulted in the death of three cowboys and the wounding of lawmen Virgil and Morgan Earp and Holliday. Wyatt Earp was unscathed.
The Earps and Holliday were charged with murder, but a Tombstone judge found the men not guilty, ruling that they were "fully justified."
