On this day, Nov. 25, in 1963, President Kennedy was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, three days after he was assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas.
Kennedy, the 35th president, was shot once in the upper back and once in the back of the head on Nov. 22 and was pronounced dead later that day.
Government investigations concluded that the lone shooter was Lee Harvey Oswald. The day before Kennedy was laid to rest, Oswald was fatally shot by Jack Ruby as Oswald was being transferred from one jail to another.
Hundreds of thousands of mourners viewed Kennedy's casket at the U.S. Capitol the day before his funeral. His body was buried after a Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Northwest Washington.
