On this day, Nov. 5, in 1989, San Diego housewife Betty Broderick killed her ex-husband and his second wife in a case that epitomized a divorce gone wrong.

Daniel Broderick III, with law and medical degrees from Harvard and Cornell, respectively, dumped the once-stunning Betty for his much younger receptionist, Linda Kolkena, who bore an uncanny resemblance to Betty in her youth.

The former couple were fighting for custody of their four children when Betty received legal papers saying she was in contempt of court for leaving vulgar voice messages on Daniel and Linda's answering machine.

Betty then snuck into their bedroom and shot Daniel and Linda dead.

She pleaded her case through the media, appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" twice, but was unconvicing to a jury, which found her guilty. She was sentenced to 32 years in prison. Her most recent parole plea was denied.
