Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli on Wednesday certified controversial new regulations on abortion providers, requiring those clinics to meet the same facility requirements as hospitals.
This summer, Cuccinelli refused to certify an earlier version of the rules because existing clinics would have been exempt from the tougher standards. But the state Board of Health reversed itself earlier this month, voting to require existing clinics to meet the new rules.
There will now be a public review period for the new regulations. Gov. Bob McDonnell also must approve them.
