A group of bicyclists will rally Friday in the District to protest motorists making illegal U-turns across the Pennsylvania Avenue that they say endangers cyclists.

The group, sponsored by the bike shop BicycleSPACE, will meet at Freedom Plaza at 7 a.m. Friday to distribute safety information about the bike lanes along Pennsylvania Avenue and circulate petitions seeking more safety measures along the street.

District Department of Transportation planner Jim Sebastian said Tuesday that keeping cars from U-turning through the bike lanes along Pennsylvania Avenue, especially taxis, was a challenge the agency was trying to correct. The Metropolitan Police Department has promised to step up enforcement along the avenue.
