The D.C. government and several major roads in the city will be closed on Tuesday as the District celebrates Emancipation Day.

Beginning at 4 a.m., Pennsylvania Avenue will be closed between 12th and 14th streets in Northwest. Parts of E Street Northwest and 13th Street Northwest will also be blocked off through 11 p.m.

Constitution Avenue will be closed from Ninth Street Northwest to Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest beginning at 9 a.m., along with Seventh Street Northwest from Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest to Independence Avenue Southwest. Those streets are scheduled to re-open at 2 p.m.

And most of Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest -- between 3rd and 12 streets Northwest -- will be closed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. And all streets that cross Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest between Fourth Street Northwest and 12th Street Northwest will be shuttered between E Street Northwest and Constitution Avenue Northwest.

Parking meters and residential parking zones won't be enforced on Tuesday, but the District said rush-hour parking restrictions will remain in place.

Tuesday marks the 151st anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the District.
