D.C. United is working those Indonesian connections again, announcing the signing of 20-year-old Syamsir Alam on loan from Belgian second division club S.C. Vise.

Alam is a well-traveled attacking midfielder from Jakarta who has played for Penarol in Uruguay, Dutch clubs SC Heerenveen and Vitesse Arnhem and the under-23 Indonesian national team.

“Syamsir is a young, attacking midfielder with good technical ability,” D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper said.

Here’s some information about Alam’s tenure at Vise according to the Belgian club. He played 50 minutes over five appearances this season before being sidelined by a shoulder injury.

The signing is no coincidence, as team owner and fellow Jakarta native Erick Thohir tweeted the following shortly after the announcement: “So happy, finally DC United have an Indonesian player. Hope Alam can perform. Jaya Indonesia.”

Last year United brought another Indonesian player, midfielder Andik Vermansyah, on trial for two weeks.

In news regarding players D.C. United hasn’t signed, they lost a weighted lottery for 18-year-old Cameroon midfielder Charles Eloundou, who went instead to the Colorado Rapids.
