Afghan security forces suffered dozens of casualties Friday in an enemy attack on an Afghan military base near the northern city of Mazar Sharif, according to the U.S. Central command.

The well-coordinated attack on a mosque and dining facilities may have resulted in more than 50 dead and wounded, said Col. John Thomas, a spokesman for the Central Command.

Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon by phone, Thomas said details were very sketchy because the attack was still going on while he was briefing, but that so far as he knows there were no U.S. or coalition casualties in the attack.
