Calling it a “big and exciting day,” for his conference, Colonial Athletic Association commissioner Tom Yeager announced the addition of Elon on Thursday afternoon. The North Carolina private school leaves the rapidly disintegrating Southern Conference to join the CAA in 2014, becoming its 10th basketball member and 12th for football.
Elon is the second Southern Conference school to flee for the CAA, joining Charleston which becomes a member this fall. Albany and Stony Brook recently joined the CAA as football members.
“Many of our athletes are from the footprint,” said Elon athletic director Dave Blank, explaining why the move was attractive for Elon.
Since becoming a Division I team in 1997-98, Elon has never made the NCAA tournament in basketball. This year Elon (21-12) won the North Division of the Southern Conference and advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. It was the most wins for the program since 1973-74.
