Evan McMullin, who ran as a third-party candidate in the 2016 presidential election, fired back at President Trump for calling him a “clown” at a Republican National Committee meeting Thursday night.
“I’d rather be a clown than a puppet,” McMullin tweeted Friday morning.
McMullin, a former CIA officer, has been a staunch critic of Trump throughout the campaign and the first year of the presidency.
Trump rehashed part of the election during his comments to Republicans at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.
“Remember when they had that clown come out,” Trump said. “That’s the guy that nobody ever heard of, supposed to be beating me? Hillary [Clinton] beat him in Utah.”
Trump has previously mocked McMullin by dubbing him Evan “McMuffin.”
McMullin has accused Trump of being Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “puppet.”
