CNN host Fareed Zakaria said Thursday that President Trump's withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement will be looked back on as "the day that the United States resigned as the leader of the free world."

"If it proves to be what we think it is, this will be the day that the United States resigned as the leader of the free world. It's nothing short of that. The irresponsibility of this act is breathtaking," Zakaria said.

Democrats have made the similar argument that the U.S., by pulling out, is abdicating its leadership position on energy and the environment to China. Trump, in making the announcement, said he is fulfilling his "solemn duty to protect America and its citizens" from an "unfair" agreement.
