A federal court scrapped two congressional districts in a unanimous opinion late Tuesday after determining the districts violated the Constitution and Voting Rights Act.

The three-judge panel found that Hispanic voters in GOP Rep. Blake Farenthold's 27th District in Corpus Christi "were intentionally deprived of their opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice." The court also ruled that the 35th Congressional District, which Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett represents in central Texas, amounted to "an impermissible racial gerrymander because race predominated in its creation without furthering a compelling state interest."

The federal court ordered the Texas attorney general to answer whether the state legislature intends to take up the court-ordered redistricting in three days or the court will hold a hearing on Sept. 5 to begin resolving the redistricting.
