A firefighter has been taken to a hospital after a two-alarm fire at a house in Alexandria, officials said.

About 11:35 a.m. Monday, firefighters went to a single-family home in the 800 block of Chalfonte Drive. There was a fire in the house's basement that had spread some to the first floor, said Robert Rodriguez, chief fire marshal of the Alexandria Fire Department.

The home was unoccupied at the time of the blaze, and the flames were extinguished within 30 minutes of firefighters' arrival, Rodriguez said. One firefighter was taken to a hospital with smoke-inhalation injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
