Alexandria Vice Mayor Kerry Donley told The Washington Examiner Monday that building a new Metrorail station at Potomac Yard will be the first major hurdle the city will leap as it looks to redevelop the area.

“That’s the critical step,” he said.

Donley said the City Council would “vigorously” pursue approval and construction of the new station, and said 2016 was the city’s “optimistic” target date for opening the station.

The City Council on Saturday approved a plan to transform Potomac Yard into a pedestrian-friendly community of small shops and residences.
