An aide to House Speaker John Boehner said President Obama personally briefed the speaker Thursday afternoon on Syria.
The call came a day after Boehner sent a list of questions to Obama about a potential U.S. military strike against the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad in retaliation for his use of chemical weapons against his own citizens.
“The president briefed the speaker this afternoon on the status of deliberations over Syria,” Boehner spokesperson Brendan Buck said. “During the call, the speaker sought answers to concerns outlined in his letter to the president yesterday, including the legal justification for any military strike, the policy and precedent such a response would set, and the objectives and strategy for any potential action.
"Only the president can answer these questions," Buck said, "and it is clear that further dialogue and consultation with Congress, as well as communication with the American public, will be needed.”
