Four people, including a 6-year-old child, were injured after a fire broke out in a Silver Spring apartment building just after sunrise Tuesday morning. One person, an adult male officials believe to be in his 60s, was taken to a burn center with life-threatening injuries.

Officials said the fire appeared to have started in the sixth floor of the Montgomery Towers Apartments at 415 Silver Spring Ave. Firefighters were dispatched shortly before 7 a.m., found fire and heavy smoke at the building, and called for additional units.

At one time, 100 firefighters were on the scene, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Beth Anne Nesselt. The firefighters rescued several people from an apartment balcony and requested RideOn buses to shelter evacuated residents in the morning cold.

Nesselt was not immediately able to provide an estimate of how many people were evacuated from the building, but she said the building had been heavily occupied.
