Former President George W. Bush says the evidence points to Russia meddling in the 2016 presidential election, countering Trump’s rhetoric.
During a talk in Abu Dhabi, Bush said “there’s pretty clear evidence that the Russians meddled.” But he stopped short of saying whether it tipped the election.
“Whether they affected the outcome is another question,” Bush said, according to the Associated Press.
U.S. intelligence agencies determined Russia interfered in the election to help Trump win. Special counsel Robert Mueller and several congressional committees are investigating whether Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to win the election.
Trump and his allies have repeatedly denied the campaign colluded with Russia.
“It’s problematic that a foreign nation is involved in our election system. Our democracy is only as good as people trust the results,” Bush said.
