Jason Feldman was raised in an Orthodox Jewish household.

He then married an Irish woman.

Considering those two facts, it makes perfect sense that he'd open Star and Shamrock Tavern & Deli, a pub-meets-deli hybrid on H Street Northeast offering the best of both Jewish and Irish delicacies.

"It's a lot more similar than you would think," Feldman said of the two traditions.

Star and Shamrock opened three years ago this April, and business seems to be brisk. The establishment serves up New York deli-style food inside an Irish pub atmosphere. You can also get traditional Irish fare and even Jewish beer.

Feldman stressed that the culinary influences aren't so much from Ireland and Israel but more reflective of the Irish and Jewish immigrant experience.

Feldman added that another deli was also needed in D.C.

"Part of the reason was I wanted to feed myself," he joked. "I figured I'd do it myself."

Star and Shamrock promises a busy weekend in celebration of St. Patrick's Day on Sunday. Feldman anticipates a packed house, being the only Irish bar in the neighborhood.

Plus the Irish-meets-Jewish thing has its appeal in commonalities.

"It's so much more in common than people think," Feldman said.
