Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz defended President Trump’s “shithole” remark, saying conditions in Haiti are actually “disgusting.”
During an interview on MSNBC on Tuesday, Gaetz said he wouldn’t have used the term “shithole” to describe Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations as the president is accused of doing, but he agreed with Trump’s sentiment.
“I would not pick those terms, but I would say that the conditions in Haiti are deplorable. They are disgusting,” he argued. “Everywhere you look in Haiti, it’s sheet metal and garbage when I was there.”
Trump has denied referring to the other nations as “shithole countries” during a meeting with lawmakers about immigration reform. Trump did acknowledge using “tough” language during the conversation.
“Look, there are very bad conditions in Haiti. It’s accurate,” Gaetz said, accusing Democrats of using the president’s comments to “derail” the immigration debate.
