Democratic congressional candidate for New York Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Wednesday she would support impeachment proceedings against President Trump should she be elected to Congress, the morning after her stunning primary challenge win against incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y.
“I would support impeachment. I think that, you know, we have the grounds to do it,” Ocasio-Cortez said during an interview on CNN.
“I think what really we need to focus on is making sure that we are advocating for the policies to win in November, but ultimately I think that what we need to kind of focus on is ensuring that we can, you know, when people break the law, potentially break the law, that we have to hold everyone accountable and that no person is above that law,” she continued.
Ocasio-Cortez, 28, distinguished herself from Crowley, a 10-term congressman, by adopting a range of more liberal policy stances in their race to represent New York’s 14th District, including being in favor of abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and rejecting corporate PAC money.
She also told MSNBC on Wednesday that politicians should not get into Twitter spats with Trump if they want to move their progressive agenda forward.
Crowley, a popular member of the Democratic caucus, was often touted as a potential successor to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
Ocasio-Cortez will run against Republican Anthony Pappas, an economics and finance professor, in the general election on Nov. 6.
