Israel shoots down Syrian fighter jet

Israel shot down a Syrian fighter Tuesday after the Russian-made Sukhoi jet ventured one mile into Israeli airspace, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Syria disputed the jet had entered Israeli airspace, saying it had been targeted by Israel while conducting raids in southern Syria, Haaretz reported.

Israel launched two Patriot missiles toward the jet after it flew into Israeli airspace. A spokesman for IDF told Haaretz that the jet crashed in Syrian territory and it’s unclear what happened to the pilots.

“Since this morning, there has been an increase in the internal fighting in Syria and the Syrian Air Force’s activity,” the Israeli army said. “The IDF is in high alert and will continue to operate against the violation of the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement.”
