The Department of Health and Human Services said that healthcare.gov received over 1 million visitors on Monday, as the administration relaunched the troubled website registering consumers in Obamacare's insurance exchanges.
HHS made the announcement Tuesday in a tweet from the healthcare.gov feed: “1 million visits to HC.gov yesterday. Site stable, faster for users.”
According to HHS, the site had seen 375,000 visits by noon and had tallied 750,000 visitors by 5:30 p.m., describing the traffic as “high volume.”
The high traffic numbers came a day after the administration said they had “met the goal” of fixing the botched website for the “vast majority” of users.
Since its launch on Oct. 1, the website has been plagued by technical problems, undercutting public support for the president’s signature domestic achievement.
Initial numbers showed fewer than expected enrollments in the first month of registration and the botched rollout hurt President Obama in the polls, with him sinking to new lows in approval rating and record numbers of Americans questioning his trustworthiness and managerial skills.
Obama vowed to fix the website by the end of November, and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Monday touted “dramatic” improvements to healthcare.gov.
Among the changes are a new queuing system that directs visitors during high traffic times to return to the site later for quicker registration.
But healthcare.gov still appeared to experience difficulties on Monday, with HHS resorting to the queuing system before hitting the 50,000 visitors the website was designed to handle.
Insurers also say that back-end problems with the website have yet to be resolved and that the process for transmitting data on enrollees and the health care plans they have selected is still faulty.
The administration though said a bug which was responsible for 80 percent of those back-end errors had been fixed, but declined to provide the error rate for sharing data with insurers.
The White House is launching a new three-week campaign through the holiday season to resell the public on Obamacare's benefits and boost enrollment before January.
