State Department to tell Americans overseas to return to US or shelter in place abroad

The State Department is expected to announce a travel advisory warning against all international travel.

The level-four travel advisory, the department’s most serious warning, will recommend all Americans abroad to return to the United States or prepare to shelter in place overseas, Politico reported.

As of Thursday morning, more than 227,000 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed across the world, according to Johns Hopkins University. Of those, nearly 85,000 people have recovered, while more than 9,300 have died.

The U.S. and Canada said Wednesday they had agreed to close their shared border to nonessential travel in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus. The U.S. has also banned foreign nationals who have traveled to China, Iran, and European countries in the 14 days before their arrival.
