Rep. Marlin Stutzman of Indiana announced Thursday that he was running for House majority whip.

Stutzman's bid, reported by a Hoosier State political weblog, could throw a wrench into a the head to head battle for whip that had materialized Wednesday between Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam of Illinois and Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the chairman of the Republican Study Committee.

A Republican insider on Capitol Hill said that the bid may be more of a strategic move, designed to help raise Stutzman's profile and make him the "heir apparent" to head the Republican Study Committee.
