For MASN, the Battle of the Beltways is a family affair. MASN and MASN2 will air the games Friday and Sunday with Fox broadcasting Saturday night.

Nationals announcer Bob Carpenter will handle most of the play-by-play duties, giving way to the Orioles' Jim Hunter for three innings. The Nationals' F.P. Santangelo and the Orioles' Mike Bordick will work together as color analysts. Saturday night's Fox telecast will feature Carpenter and Billy Ripken.

I spoke to Carpenter about the Battle of the Beltways.

Is covering this team the most fun you have had in Washington?

Carpenter »

"I have been here for seven years, and we have had a number of wonderful guys who have played here during that time, but this group is special. They come to the park every day expecting to win, and they play hard to the final out. This is my 29th year broadcasting Major League Baseball, and the beauty of this team is the quality of its young stars. Beyond Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, there are guys like Ian Desmond, Danny Espinosa, Wilson Ramos and Stephen Lombardozzi all who will be around for years. Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann, Ross Detwiler are the core of what might be one of baseball's best pitching staffs for the next five years or more. Plus, the ownership's commitment to invest in young players and reward those who have performed well like Ryan Zimmerman -- while going after key free agents -- that's the formula for building a long-term contender."

What should we expect from the Battle of the Beltways?

Carpenter » "Each team in their own way has been a surprise to many in baseball. ... I think that the next five or six weeks are key for both these teams. The schedules are very challenging. ... If we are both still around the top of our divisions at the All-Star break -- and I think we can be -- then this summer and more importantly the fall in Washington and Baltimore will be very special."
