Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday visited with victims of the Navy Yard mass shooting.

"VP Biden has arrived at Washington Hospital Center to visit patients injured Monday at the #NavyYard. @MedStarWHC," tweeted @VP, the official Twitter feed of Biden's office Wednesday afternoon.

Aaron Alexis, a former Navy reservist, murdered 12 people at the Navy Yard on Monday during a shooting rampage. Alexis was shot and killed by law enforcement officials.

The White House announced Wednesday that President Obama would attend a memorial service for victims of the shooting to be held on Sunday.

Obama on Monday called the shooting a "cowardly act." In an interview on Tuesday with Telemundo, the president also said Congress should revisit the issue of gun control to prevent further tragedies.

Obama has made enacting tougher gun restrictions a second term priority after a gunman killed 26 children and school employees in Newtown, Conn., last December.

The president issued a number of executive actions earlier this year to tighten enforcement of federal gun laws, but action on Congress has stalled in the face of opposition from GOP lawmakers and the nation's gun lobby.
