Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said Democrats would be wasting their time to make impeachment central to their national message heading into the 2018 midterm elections.
In an interview Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," Manchin, who is up for re-election next year, said he wouldn't be campaigning on impeaching President Trump.
"I don’t think impeachment is something we should be talking about. If facts come out, if these investigations go down that line and if the rule of law is exercised and we see that there's reason to go in that direction, the House will make that decision," Manchin said.
He added, "So, I’m not going to waste my time or energy on that. I think it’s futile at this point in time."
Several congressional Democrats have called for impeaching Trump based on what they say is erratic behavior or allegations that his campaign colluded with Russia.
Other Democrats have called on Trump to resign over past accusations of sexual misconduct.
