Kevin de Leon, president pro tempore of the California State Senate, officially announced on Wednesday he plans to run against incumbent Sen. Dianne Feinstein in the Democratic primary and bring California's "fight to Washington."
Addressing an enthusiastic crowd of a couple hundred at the Los Angeles Trade College, de Leon kicked-off his campaign by vowing to "fight" the Trump administration and "grow the California dream"
Last week, the progressive Democrat announced his intent to challenge the 84-year-old senator who has held the seat since 1992. De Leon has been a long-time critic of Feinstein, most notably when it comes to single-payer healthcare.
Offering the voters a progressive option to their moderate Senator, de Leon promised voters he would "lead the resistance" against "any efforts that will shred our social fabric or Constitution."
Following the speech, de Leon took a jab at Feinstein and tweeted, "the DC playbook is obsolete and it's time that we, the people of California, bring the agenda to Washington -- not the other way around."
