Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock reportedly used his vantage point from the Mandalay Bay hotel Sunday night to try to hit large aviation fuel tanks as he opened fire on a crowd at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival.
The 64-year-old was able to make his mark but the bullets did not breach the two circular tanks to potentially cause a massive explosion, according to a source who spoke with the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The tanks stand about 1,100 feet from the concert venue and have since been inspected by FBI agents, per the Nevada news outlet.
FBI spokeswoman Sandra Breault told the newspaper she couldn't "comment on an ongoing investigation."
Paddock killed 58 people and injured nearly 500 more when he targeted concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay in the largest mass shooting in recent U.S. history. Paddock was found dead in his hotel room by police after the shooting.
