Ted Leonsis is taking a big step into the sports media world. On Monday, his Monumental Sports & Entertainment announced a content partnership with SB Nation and its nine D.C.- and Baltimore-focused websites, a move that will expand the company's local and regional sports coverage.
SB Nation, which is owned by D.C.-based Vox Media, owns and operates more than 320 websites dedicated to pro team news or sport-specific sites. The Monumental-SB Nation combo means the two can "cross promote features and programs," maximizing coverage and publicity, the news release says. In other words, the guy who owns two D.C. sports teams just got himself first-level access to legitimate fan sites.
Two new features will also mark the new deal:
• Press Box: A bi-weekly, roundtable that features spirited discussions from reporters, broadcasters and bloggers covering local teams and national sports news. Each new episode is scheduled to air at noon on Monumental team sites as well as participating SB Nation partner sites.
• On the Road: The go-to place for Wizards and Capitals fans to check up on their team's upcoming opponent and features content from SB Nation reporters. The premiere is scheduled to preview the Wizards' Nov. 30 game against the New York Knicks.
