Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham joked about President Trump referring to himself as a “very stable genius,” saying that description wouldn’t have come to mind for anyone unless Trump himself brought it up.
“If he doesn’t call himself a genius, nobody else will,” Graham said during a Monday appearance on “The View.”
Trump tweeted Saturday that he was “like, really smart” and that he would qualify as “not smart, but genius….and a very stable genius at that!” as questions arose about his mental stability following the release of Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.
After cracking the joke, Graham went on to defend the president.
“You can say anything you want about the guy,” he said. “I said he was a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot. I ran out of things to say. He won. Guess what. He’s our president now.”
In a turnaround from Trump’s early days in office, Graham commended Trump for “doing a really good job on multiple fronts.”
