Mendelson seeks Rhee’s plans on firing ‘underperforming’ teachers

D.C. Councilman Phil Mendelson says he’s worried that schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee is trying to get rid of veteran educators and is asking Rhee to detail her  plan to weed out “underperforming” teachers.

“While we share the goal of ensuring that all DCPS students get the highest level of classroom instruction,” Mendelson wrote in a Jan. 8 letter, “I am troubled by reports that the 90-day plan may be disproportionately administered to senior teachers.”

Rhee hasn’t explained her proposal yet, but says she wants to put failing teachers in a 90-day mentoring program. Those who don’t improve would be fired or reassigned.

The teachers union has blasted the plan, saying that Rhee is trying to bust the union under the guise of helping failing teachers.
Rhee has said she is trying to introduce much-needed accountability into the $1 billion school system.

Rhee did not respond to a request for comment. Her spokeswoman said Friday that she has not received Mendelson’s letter yet.

Mendelson, D-at large, was one of only two council members to vote against Mayor Adrian Fenty’s takeover of the school system.

In his Jan. 8 letter, Mendelson said he wanted Rhee to explain what she meant by “underperforming.”

“It’s important that there is not only a clear set of criteria that is used when labeling a teacher ‘underperforming,’ ” Mendelson’s letter states. “But also a fair way to measure the performance of the supervisors responsible for helping these teachers to proficiency.”

Mendelson has given Rhee until Wednesday to explain:

How many teachers are on the “underperforming” list;

How they got there;

The years of service for each teacher on the list;

The years of service for the “mentors.”

It is painfully obvious what the chancellor is trying to do. it is also very obvious that the main underperforming person in the sytem is the chancellor. This city pays too much in salary and perks to continue with this nonsense. WE need experience at 825. So far we have only had foolishness. The taxpayers and voters are tired of this.

Mendelson is such a union hack. We need accountability for poor performance - union opposes. We need flexibility to reassign poor performers - union opposes. Basically everything you need to pull DCPS out of the rat hole that it's in from years of union control, Mendelson opposes. These union folks are zealots - all about them and building the union for the sake of the union. Mendelson is an old school political machine guy - strong union, broke and inefficient systems, so you can argue for more unions and get lots of union votes so he stays in office. For the sake of our kids, I hope those days are over.

MattDC, based on your comments, I take it that you don't believe in due process. Let me guess, as long as the employee is non-union, then they deserve it, if they belong to a union then asking that they receive due process is the reason this dysfunctional system is broken. Not the years of poor leadership by the Courts when it was under Judge Christians control, not the school board who failed to support reform minded experiences former school suprientendents, not the City Council who failed to exercise it's oversight authority, and finally not the former mayors who did not make the schools a priority. According to you MattDC it's the teachers fault. Clearly you don't know the history of this city. It's the dedicated DCPS teachers that have held the mess together this long without any support. Get the facts before mouthing off.
